VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE is

"...a wildly funny and deeply touching dramedy."
- Amador Ledger Dispatch

"...entertaining and insightful. Inventive Comedy.
An impressive array of talent."

- Union Democrat

The show "had me leaving the theater feeling pretty good because I'd laughed so much. If you’re in the mood for some giggles at the ridiculous predicaments some of us place ourselves in as time marches on, take a look."
- Sierra Lodestar

“It’s been our cross to bear that our parents gave us names from Chekhov plays. Such was the burden of having two professor parents; and so active in community theater as well.” – Vanya

KNOW YOUR CHEKHOV

Playwright Christopher Durang is a hoot! And a little weird. In Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, he has taken names and themes from Anton Chekhov’s plays and mashed them up with contemporary references. You need not be familiar with Chekhov to enjoy and understand Durang's play, but just for fun, we've put together this quick overview.

In Vanya and Sonia we see:
  • A trio of hopeful siblings
    (Three Sisters)
  • The disrupted lives of Vanya and Sonia (Uncle Vanya)
  • A self-proclaimed miserable woman caught in a love triangle with a young aspiring actress (The Seagull)
  • References to Chekhov's famous "Let's go to Moscow" and his well-known cherry tree orchard
Did you know?
  • Chekhov lived from 1860-1904.
  • He is considered a father of theatre’s early modernism.
  • A reviewer of Chekhov’s work states that he “nailed the hilarious, bittersweet horror of everyday existence.” Christopher Durang has done exactly the same thing with his oddly quirky, fun piece that makes us laugh a lot and cringe a little at ourselves.
